Description
At Aston Martin Formula One, performance starts with engineering excellence. We are seeking a Materials Engineer to join our Structures and Materials Group, supporting the development, testing, and analysis of advanced materials that contribute directly to the performance and reliability of our Formula One cars.
As a Materials Engineer, you will play a key role in materials testing, analysis, and development. Working closely with colleagues across the Materials Group and Design Office, you will generate valuable engineering insights through testing and investigation, while supporting the development of new materials, processes, and laboratory capabilities.
This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive engineer to work with cutting-edge composite, metallic and non-metallic materials in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting mechanical testing, metallographic assessment, and analytical evaluation of composite, metallic, and non-metallic materials.
- Interpreting test data, identifying trends, and providing engineering recommendations to support development programmes.
- Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment including tensile test systems, FTIR, DMA, DSC, and microscopy tools.
- Preparing adhesive bond, composite, and metallographic samples for testing and failure investigations.
- Recording, analysing, and reporting laboratory results, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and high-quality engineering interpretation.
- Supporting component failure investigations through sample preparation, evidence gathering, root-cause analysis, and technical reporting.
- Contributing to the development of new materials, test methods, specifications, and process documentation.
- Driving continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory and collaborating with other departments to solve technical challenges.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Degree-qualified (or equivalent) in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of composite and metallic materials used within automotive or high-performance engineering applications.
- Experience using laboratory test equipment and analytical techniques, including mechanical testing and materials characterisation methods.
- Understanding of composite test specimen preparation and testing methodologies.
- Experience of metallographic specimen preparation and analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and deliver results to demanding timescales.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with colleagues across multiple disciplines.
